Book Review: Gild
by Raven Kennedy
Yes! This is a series I never knew I needed! YES. YES. YES!
This is the first book I’ve read by Raven Kennedy and it will not be the last. I love the main character, Auren. I think she’s strong, relatable and hilarious! I was hooked after page 1.
The plot is also amazing and so well executed! It’s got depth! Which I love. And, I think it has potential to be one of favorite plots, time will tell (I’ve only read book 1).
I can see why some people compare this series to A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. There are a few similar concepts, I won’t give them away because I don’t want to ruin anything. However, I will say this, I don’t care who did it first, I care who did it better; and Raven Kennedy DID. IT. BETTER! She created a main character that was tough, hilarious and multi dimensional. Her plot was surprising and had depth. Her world was better built and I wanted to fall into it. Her villains were scarier. And her writing was stronger.
*Note: When I was reading the reviews for this book there were quite a few people who didn’t like it because of some of the tougher themes featured in this series. I get that it’s not for everyone. Personally, I love tough themes like this. I think they are extremely useful in showing character growth. If every main character didn’t have misguided thoughts the theme wouldn’t be very strong. The character is on a journey and so are we. Don’t confuse every thought the main character has as the opinion of the author.
A helpful tip, if a bunch a book reviews are saying the writing is bad, then it might not be a great book. However, if a bunch of book reviews are complaining about the theme of the novel, don’t be deterred unless the theme is something you know you’re not into. My philosophy when picking out books, the number of reviews is much more important than the number of stars. For example, a 4 star book with 5,000 reviews is going to be much better than a 5 star book with 500 reviews.
